In the final round of D-League before play-offs both the Workforcexs Cobras and the Workforcexs Lady Cobras knew the equation they had to defeat Sandringham if they wanted any chance making play-offs.
Unfortunately for the Workforcexs Lady Cobras defeating Sandringham by two points on Saturday night was not enough for them to reach play-offs; Kilsyth needed the Frankston Lady Blues to lose one of their two games over the weekend if they were to sneak into fourth position but luck was not on their side with Frankston defeating both Dandenong and Bendigo.
Clare Cherry (11pts, 7rbds) and Kodie Kroussoratis (14pts) were Kilsyth’s best over Sandringham in the 51-49 win. The Workforcexs Lady Cobras finished the season in fifth position and must be congratulated on a fantastic effort all season.
For the Workforcexs Cobras they knew that if they defeated Sandringham they would make play-offs, a strong second and third quarter from Kilsyth ensured that they would live to see another week with their 69-57 win.
The match started out evenly with neither side able to take the ascendency, scores all locked up at 12 points apiece at the first break. With so much on the line the Workforcexs Cobras came out on the second quarter with their minds on the job ahead, some great three point shooting gave them the ascendency over Sandringham going into halftime leading by eight points.
Sandringham struggled from the filed in the third quarter shooting at just 23.1% accuracy which enabled the Workforcexs Cobras to extend their lead to 17 points going into the final term. Sandringham dug deep in the last quarter but it was to no avail with the Workforcexs Kilsyth Cobras running out 12 point winners.
Aaron Reinbott was outstanding with 28 points; he was well supported by Daniel Tomada (20pts, 3as), Adam Knott (7pts, 17rbds, 3as) and Stephen O’Brien (12pts, 9rbds).
The win now sees Kilsyth take on the Nunawading Spectres next Sunday to see who will go thru to the 2011 D-League Grand Final the following weekend.
The Workforcexs Kilsyth Cobras face the Nunawading Spectres at Nunawading Basketball Stadium Sunday August 7; tip-off is at 2:00pm.
