Zac Wuersching has been named the new head coach for the Yarra Valley Waste Cobra Men.
Wuersching – a Kilsyth junior – takes over the VYC Cobra Men following four years as an assistant coach with the NBL1 Cobra Men, and a strong coaching career within the Junior Cobra ranks. Prior to his time with the NBL Cobra Men, Wuersching guided the U20 Cobras to an Eltham Dandenong Tournament championship in and undefeated start to 2020 before the the season’s abrupt end during COVID, and led the U18-1 Cobra Boys to a Victorian Championship Reserve title in 2022.
And now at the helm of the VYC Cobras program, Wuersching will look to build his winning pedigree at the VYC level, with the former Mt Evelyn Meteors’ claiming a pair of VYC championships with the Cobras in 2015 and 2017 as the team’s starting centre. His high-IQ as a player has translated to his coaching, with Wuersching’s X’s and O’s and scouting skillset – along with his strong leadership qualities – putting the Cobras in good stead heading into 2025.
Kilsyth Basketball Manager of Basketball Operations, Mark Watkins, is excited to see Wuersching continue his coaching journey at his home club, with his senior level experience and success as both a player and coach making him the ideal fit to take over a Cobra team coming off back-to-back VYC championship game appearances.
“I am very pleased that Zac has accepted our VYC Mens Head Coaching position; his loyalty and dedication to the club is just reward for his appointment,” Watkins said.
“Zac has done a great job as an assistant coach with the NBL1 Cobra Men, and this will put him in good stead to implement his style with a very successful, established program.”
Wuersching will be joined on the sidelines by Ben Ahale, who – along with his U18-1 Boys head coaching duties – will serve as an assistant coach for the VYC Men for a third season.
