Werner was the shining light in a challenging and injury plagued season for the Cobras. Werner was recognised for his outstanding season with a place in the All SEABL South Conference team. He finished the season ranked 9th in points (21.1ppg) at 54.8% from the field and 1st in rebounds (14.7rpg). Werner recorded 20 double-doubles and three 20 point–20 rebound games, cementing his place amongst the SEABL elite.
Recruited from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Werner, 200cm, 116kg forward, finished his NCAA Division 3 career in 2007 starting all 27 games and recording 13 double-doubles. Averaging 16.7 points (at 56% FG) and 9.7 rebounds in his senior year, Werner became the School’s all time blocks leader, and finished his career second in field goal percentage and rebounds and fifth in scoring.
Coach Grant Wallace was ecstatic about the announcement, “Joe has proved all the doubters wrong during the 2008 SEABL Season. He has a massive physical presence on the floor and compliments our team and Club extremely well.”
“Despite all the disruptions this year, Joe was a constant and continued to put up quality numbers and we are happy to have his commitment for the 2009 SEABL Season. He has created quite a following in the local community with his work ethic, high flying dunks and work within the ANZ Kids First program. I am sure he will come back in 2009 and continue to build his army of fans.”
All Cobra and SEABL fans can look forward to the return of Joe Werner for Season 2009 in early January.
