The Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Association is located in the North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne in the Shire of Yarra Ranges and will be hosting this year’s Under 16 Australian Junior Championships. All 110 games will be played at the Kilsyth Sports Centre (115 Liverpool Road, Kilsyth) from Saturday 9 July until Saturday 16 July.
There will be 14 men’s teams and 14 women’s teams battling it out for the title of Australia’s best basketball team under the age of 16, including two teams from New Zealand. A high level of competition can be expected all week.
The Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Association is the largest Basketball Association in Australia with approximately 1,000 domestic teams competing in its competitions every week.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges has thrown its support behind the tournament seeing this as the perfect opportunity for people from around Australia to experience the uniqueness of the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges.
The event’s Opening Ceremony, which is always a massive highlight for the young stars, will be held on Saturday 9th July 2011 from 5:30pm.
The Gold medal games for the men and women will both be played on the Hugh McMenamin Court at the Kilsyth Sports Centre on Saturday 16 July 2011, with the women’s title game to tip-off at 5:00pm and the men’s to follow with tip-off at 7:00pm.
Grant Wallace, General Manager of Kilsyth Basketball advised, “All teams would have been preparing for many months for the passionate battles of State versus State and Metro versus Country. The Australian Junior Championships are a unique event and all basketball enthusiasts should attend to witness the healthy future of our sport. Also, we have a number of ancillary events scheduled such as presentations by high profile state and national coaches and referees to increase our learning’s and appreciation of the game and better our sport at the local level.“
