Under 12-4 Boys

The 12-4 Cobra boys went into playing their very first tournament as a team at the Southern Peninsula Tournament. The boys played well on Saturday, winning their three games for the day against Mornington 3, Bulleen 5 and Korumburra 1, which secured a Semi Final spot on Sunday afternoon. The boys had fresh legs Sunday morning and continued to improve as a team, winning their first game of the day against Frankston 5.  In their semi final against Ringwood 3, they played their hearts out and all 10 boys put in 100% effort, allowing us to win by 24 points.

With 30 minutes of rest before our Grand Final, we were playing Korumburra 1 for the second time in the tournament. We knew it would be a tough game playing a 1’s team for the second time and knew Korumburra would come out firing after their loss against us the previous day. The boys started the game strong, giving us a comfortable lead at half time. Despite being extremely tired, the boys were able to hold onto their lead to win the U12 Boys Division 3 Grand Final, 35-21.

Congratulations to Nick Watson on winning the Grand Final MVP and a massive thank you to Steve Foxwell and Josh Cheney for being our Assistant Coaches this weekend and to our Team Manager Lori Watson for all her hard work organising the tournament.

Under 16-3 Girls

The Kilsyth girls 16.3 attended the 2014 Southern Peninsular Tournament and were graded in Division 3. Both parents and players and coach were backing up from the long road trip up to Traralgon on the Friday night getting home at 1am in the morning this didn’t stop them playing some really good basketball over the Saturday and Sunday with wins over Bulleen 5 (26-14), Mornington 2 (25-17), Dandenong 4 (24-18), and Melbourne 4 (34-9).

This set us up the Semi Final against Camberwell 3, and the girls came out firing to win 22–12. Unfortunately we then ran into a red hot Ringwood 2 team, going down 24-15 in the grand final.

This was a most enjoyable weekend with parents able to watch their kids coming together in such a short period of time and put together some really good team efforts, The games were broken up with a couple of trips to the beach and some enjoyable lunches.

Special mention to Jimmy Dalgleish after competing the recent scoring training managed to sit in on his first game in six years

Go Cobras!

U14-2 Girls

Overall we had a fantastic tournament on and off the court. Not only did the girls combine well on the court as a team, but also they bonded socially off the court. We really noticed an improvement in the girls basketball in terms of "playing together as a team". The team was particularly excited when Maddison Marshall shot her first goal in Representative basketball!  Everyone cheered and the girls were genuinely happy for her! The girls supported each other on the court and combined more as a team, setting up some basic plays in offence and encouraging each other in defence. It was terrific for Dave and Sharni to see the girls play in four consecutive games and the coaches were able to see combinations on the court and watch the girls attitude and effort on the court.

Our wins and losses were marginal, proving to us that we were graded well. We lost the first round to Sandringham by five points, and then won our second round game against Bulleen 3 by seven points. The girls played very well as a team in this game. In round three, we were defeated by Frankston 2 by only one point. Finally in round 4, we lost to Ringwood by nine points. The score wasn’t indicative of the close game and with more time, we could have closed the gap further as our start was slow. Ringwood ended up winning the tournament so we were proud of our results against them.

The highlight of the tournament for us was the team bonding, the parents getting to know each other and the coaches bonding with the players.

U12-2 Girls

The girls got off to a good start on Saturday morning with a 21-9 win against the Sandringham Sabres in what was a great team effort.  In the second game against Hawthorn 3, the girls started slow and gave Hawthorn a substantial lead at half time. A turnaround in the second half saw the girls outscore their opponents; however, they were unable to bridge the gap and were defeated by eight points.  The third and final game for Saturday saw the girls come up against a much bigger and physically stronger team in Phoenix United. After a great contest the girls unfortunately went down by one point to the team that ended up winning the Grand Final. With only game on Sunday the girls came out ready to play, convincingly beating the Korumburra Wildcats 25-5.

All in all a great time was had, in what was the first tournament for many of the girls.

16-2 Girls

Our girls had two games on Saturday, which we lost by small margins.  They then had a team bonding session on Saturday afternoon at the beach with Jenna (AC) which they loved; really getting to know each other and having a lot of fun.

We had two games on Sunday: we went down to Bulleen by three points and then won our last game against Whittlesea. Unfortunately, we missed out on finals but definitely saw improvement as the weekend progressed.

The under 14-1 Girls

The girls had plenty of fun competing in the Southern Peninsula Tournament over the weekend. They have come from six different teams from last year, so it was a great opportunity for the girls to bond both on and off the floor. We had a great win over Frankston 1 on Saturday and had three losses to Nunawading 2, Bulleen 1 and Waverley 1. The girls should be very proud of themselves for competing as hard as they did over the weekend. I look forward to coaching this group of girls for the rest of the season.

U14-4 Boys – Southern Peninsula Tournament

The tournament experience again proved to be a positive force in team bonding. After a couple of hard fought games and not yet having a win on the board, the coach, assistant coach and players regrouped at the pub and came out Sunday morning in “defence” mode, taking on Mornington 3’s like a completely different team.

After a team morning tea and a bit of cricket the boys finished their tournament rounds with a smashing win 30-13 over Camberwell 3’s. Leaving the team just out of semi-final contention.

A good weekend all round. Well done Boys!

A big thanks to Coach Nathan Reed, Assistant Coach Mark Brownfield and the parents for your help.
