Michael Walsh has been appointed head coach of the Yarra Valley Waste Cobra Women for the 2025 VYC season.

Walsh steps up to lead the VYC Women following eight years as the lead VYC Women’s assistant coach, helping guide the group to playoff berths in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. And while he’s been a key figure on the VYC sideline, Walsh has also enjoyed a standout junior head coaching career with the Cobras.

His junior success was highlighted by an incredible 2023 run, which saw Walsh’s U14-1 Girls win the National Junior Classic, VC State Championship, and National Club Championship silver medal, losing just a single game for the entirety of the year. Walsh has continued on last year’s spectacular run with the U14 Girls, leading them to a National Junior Classic bronze medal, VC Final Four berth, and second consecutive National Club Championships invite this season.

Walsh also spent three years as the Cobra U18-1 Girls head coach, helping develop current NBL1 stars, Nikita Young and Georgia Booth. With over a decade of experience in the senior ranks and a track record of head coaching success, Walsh is well suited to build on the success of the Cobras VYC program.

“Michael’s appointment is just reward for all his time and effort in both the junior and senior Cobra programs,” Kilsyth Basketball Manager of Basketball Operations, Mark Watkins said.

“He has grown as a coach over the past few years and had great success in implementing the Cobras Style of Play into his teams.”

“Michael and the VYC program will continue to work closely with the NBL1 squad to continue the connection between the senior teams, and play a key role in developing our next crop of NBL1 stars.”
