Kilsyth Basketball hosted its bi-annual McDonald’s Community Basketball Family Fun Day this past Saturday at Kilsyth Sports Centre. The event featured several activities for kids to participate in including an autograph session with the Swinburne Kilsyth Cobras players, a free basketball clinic, a 3 on 3 competition, mini golf, and several prizes and giveaways for all participants.
The event drew in over 100 kids from the local community to Kilsyth Sports Centre. The hour-long clinic allowed participants the chance to practice their individual Basketball skills while also enjoying some games and was run by Cobra D-League players Aaron Reinbott, Anthony Mazzella, Jenna Verhoef-Jenkins, and Taylor Walshe. At the autograph session, kids received signed posters of Cobra players Auryn MacMillan, Zach Malvik, Garfield Blair, and Sarah Parsons. Those present for the autograph session also received free family passes for the evening’s SEABL double header games between the Swinburne Kilsyth Cobras and the Nunawading Spectres.
One of the most popular events of the day was the 3 on 3 competition. Registered teams entered into two divisions, U18 boys and U14 mixed. After round robin play and then a single elimination tournament, one team emerged as the winner for each division. Winning the U18 boys division was the Boston City Bucks, comprised of players James Grixti, Liam Urquhart, and Michael Gills. The U14 mixed division was won by Jai Mortimer, Jamie A’Hale, and Leigh Pomponio from the Dream Team. The winning teams won a share of $300 in prize money.
“It was great to see so many kids at the stadium experiencing the different activities and getting a chance to see what Kilsyth Basketball is all about,” said Community Relations Officer Haydn Smith. “We hope to see them all back at the stadium soon!”
Kilsyth Basketball was pleased to partner with McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Mini Golf Hire, and the Yarra Ranges Weekly to put on such a successful event for the community.
