Australian Junior Championships have been an important stepping stone in the career pathway of Australian basketballers. Many of Australia’s best players took part in an Australian Junior Championship before going on to represent Australia at Olympic or World Championships level, including Opals Lauren Jackson and Kristi Harrower and Boomers Patrick Mills and Mark Worthington.
The Championships will see a total of 28 men’s and women’s teams compete, with two from New Zealand This is the first time Kilsyth Basketball has hosted a junior National Championships and the Association is honored to be selected to host such a prestigious event. It shows the faith, respect and understanding Basketball Australia has in the Kilsyth Basketball community.
The event also allows the Kilsyth Basketball community the opportunity to become involved in a national sporting championship as well as showing the country how well we do things here at Kilsyth. Kilsyth Basketball’s General Manager Grant Wallace believes that “the Association is geared up for the challenge of hosting a successful Championships and creating an ongoing legacy which ensures the Association, the Yarra Ranges community and future championship hosts can benefit from the seeds we will plant for years to come”.
The Championships are a great illustration of the young and exciting talent that plays basketball in this country, and a great event for basketball lovers and families alike. With the Championships being run in the second week of the school holidays they represent a great school holiday activity for the Kilsyth Community.
