In a high scoring affair both teams came out firing with Kilsyth quickly racing to a 8-0 lead. With McMenamin pushing the ball on the break Sarah Parsons (12pts, 16rbds, 9 assists) and Hayley Moffatt (6 pts, 7rbds) found some easy buckets. Nunawading pulled the margin back and before long the score was tied at 14. Each team went basket for basket for the rest of the term but a three by Spectres star Jenna O’Hea (27pts, 9 rbds) gave them the edge at the break.
With both teams shooting the ball well the crowd was entertained by a free flowing game. Kilsyth will be disappointed in shooting just 63% from the free throw line but it could be the number of free throws shot that Coach Jason Knight will want to discuss. Nunawading went to the line 33 times to the Lady Cobras 19.
The second term was once again played at a lightning pace with both teams putting on the points. Nunawading pushed out to the early lead by it was the Lady Cobras shooting the allowed them to go into the break all square at 49. Gemma Kerr (21pts) lit up from behind the arc, hitting two big three’s on her way to 5/10 for the game.
Desiree Glaubitz looked like exploding for a massive night mid way through the second term but after a 3 point basket, didn’t score again in the match. Her lack of points in the fourth quarter hurt the Lady Cobras but it was the poor defense which ultimately cost them the game.
The Lady Cobras managed to extend their lead to 11 with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd term and after a Spectres timeout, it was all Nunawading from then on. They drew equal at the last break and Jenna O’Hea hit 8 of the first 10 points of the 4th to put the Spectres out by 10. Kilsyth never looked like catching up as the Spectres answered on every Cobra bucket.
Coach Jason Knight will have been disappointed not to get the win as his girls won each of the crucial statistics in field goal percentage, rebounds and assists but not the one the counts points.
Although not the perfect way for Erica McMenamin to celebrate game number 200, her achievement should not be overlooked. Erica fought hard all night to do whatever the team needed and finished with 4pts, 6 assists and 6 rbds.
Club Kilsyth Lady Cobras are once again at home next Sunday to take on the Ballarat Lady Miners in a game which could decide where they will finish in 2008. A win over the Lady Miners will go close to cementing their place in the SEABL finals.
