Despite a steller game from Lady Cobras (4-4) veteran Erica McMenamin (24pts, 5/6 3pt) and an 11 point quarter time lead the Lady Cobras were unable to pick up their 2nd road victory of the season.
Kilsyth got the jump early behind the shooting of McMenamin and Hayley Moffatt (14pts, 8 rbds) but the young Spartans were not to be outdone reeling off a 27-11 2nd term to go into the main break leading by 5.
The physical Spartans outfit rattled the Lady Cobras who coughed up the ball 27 times and lost the points in the paint 28-40.
Clare Papavs and Sarah Parsons both finished with 10pts and 6 rbds but didn’t provide the scoring punch which has become expected in 2008.
Coach Jason Knight was disappointed with the loss, knowing the consequences of lossing to teams below them on the ladder.
“We got the jump on them early then allowed them to beat us up, Erica led from the front but we turned it over to much.”
A major concern for Knight will be the Lady Cobras free throw shooting after they shot 16/28 at just 57% compared with the Spartans 68%.
With Desiree Glaubitz due back for the Lady Cobras over the next few weeks, it could not come at a better time as they try and keep their position in the top 4. With 3 standout and unbeaten teams in the competition the Lady Cobras are currently battling to hold onto 4th position with the improving Knox Raiders, Ballarat Miners and Frankston Blues chasing them down quickly.
The Lady Cobras will again be on the road next week travelling to Albury who continue to improve despite some big losses. Sarah Parsons and Clare Papavs will be called on to provide a bigger impact in this game and get the Lady Cobras back in the top 4.
