The Kilsyth Cobras have appointed Zach Moult to lead the Cobra Men for the 2025 NBL1 season.
Moult makes the jump to lead the NBL1 program following a strong four-year stint at the helm of the VYC Men’s program. Moult led the Cobras to a 19-3 regular season mark in 2024 – best in the league – with the Cobras advancing to their second consecutive VYC Championship Game. In 2023, Moult and the Cobras finished with the league’s second best record en-route to a title game appearance, building on a 2022 campaign that and also saw them earn a semi-final berth.
Over the past two seasons combined, Moult’s VYC Men boasted the league’s top ranked offensive and defensive unit, and post-COVID the Cobras enjoyed the league’s best combined four-year win/loss record. The Cobras play was recognised by the league over the past two seasons, with Moult earring back-to-back VYC Coach of the Year honours, while a pair of Cobras in Lachie Vander Vorm and Hamish MacDonald – who was also named league Defensive Player of the Year – were each named to the VYC All Star 5 in 2024.
Moult – who played his junior and senior basketball with the Cobras – has also enjoyed success the Victorian State program over the past four years, serving as an assistant coach for the national championship winning U20 Men’s this year, and last year’s team that earned a bronze medal finish. And this time he’s set to lead the U20 Men at the 2025 National Championships in Ballarat, having been named head coach for the program earlier this month.
Kilsyth Basketball Manager of Basketball Operations, Mark Watkins, is excited to have Moult on board to lead the Cobra Men, and expects his success and entertaining brand of basketball to continue at the NBL1 level.
“The club is very pleased to announce Zach as our NBL1 Men’s Head Coach for the next two seasons,” Watkins said.
“He successfully went through a process where the club interviewed a number of good prospects, and we are excited to have Zach elevate the team into championship contention in 2025.”
“He has worked very hard at his coaching with success at both under 18’s and recently with back-to-back VYC grand final appearances, and his passion and loyalty to the Cobras and its pathway will follow through into the NBL1 program.
“Zach’s style of play will help elevate the Cobras to play exciting, up-tempo basketball at both ends of the court.”
