Sarah Parsons 20 pts, 12 rbds and 4 assists and Clare Papavs 22 pts, 5 rbds, 4 assists and 3 steals led the way for the Cobras and proved a handful for the inexperienced Raiders. Second year player Hayley Moffatt continued her impressive start to Season 2008 recording 16 pts.
The game provided a great challenge for the Lady Cobras who recorded an ugly win over Albury last week. Moving up to 4th on the SEABL ladder the Lady Cobras will be keen to put together a solid streak to consolidate their position in 2008. This win over the Raiders will be crucial at season end with the possible Head to Head result coming into play.
Each quarter of the game was much the same, with the Lady Cobras getting out to an early lead and the Raiders pulling it back. The Lady Cobras led for 39 minutes of the match and never looked in doubt against the heavily recruited Raiders. The Cobras have made just one change to their team from 2007 compared to a wealth of outsider changes for the Raiders.
The most important statistic for the Lady Cobras was points in the paint where they outscored the bigger Raiders 44-22. With a slow paced half court game, Coach Jason Knight was pleased with his team’s execution.
The Lady Cobras will be keen to get back on the training track next week as they prepare for one of the most important rounds of the season as they take on Frankston, Saturday night at home and back up Sunday away at Nunawading. Knight will be looking for at least a split of these games and stay ahead of the pack within the top 4.
The Lady Cobras 21 point victory was crucial in Kilsyth retaining the Cystic Fibrosis Cup as the Cobras were blown off the court by the Raider Men. Down by as much as 30 points late in the 4th quarter, Gerard Leonard and Zach Malvik hit some late shots to pull the deficit back to 21 so the Cobras could retain the Cup.
The Cobras (2-1) went down to the Raiders 85-106 in an early season wake up call. Zach Malvik 26pts, Gerard Leonard 24pts and Joe Werner 17 pts and 11 rbds racked up the stats but it wasn’t enough to get over the Raiders.
After early foul trouble for Adam Jackson the Cobras bench looked short with Jon Croft still to return from injury and Tim Mulhall missing the match. The support for the Cobras big guns was not enough as the Raiders had six players in double figures and another two with 8 points.
As was the difference in the early women’s match, points in the paint was a key statistic with the Cobras been outscored 30-62 in the defeat.
Coach Grant Wallace will get back to the drawing board and plan a tough week on the track before a hectic schedule which is sure the test the Cobras depth.
The Cobras face Canberra at home next Saturday night before taking on Frankston in Big Wednesday Action then travelling to Southern Districts the following weekend to face the Spartans in what looks to be a season defining week.
