Junior Cobra David Okwera has accepted a scholarship to attend the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The 6’10 Okwera heads to the CoE following a standout 2019 at Kilsyth and big start to 2020, helping him rack up a number of accolades and some impressive NCAA Division 1 scholarship offers. In 2019 Okwera was named team MVP of the U18-1 Boys, helping lead the team to a top-five finish at the National Junior Classic and the best record in the Victoria. His rapid rise saw him then earn a place on the Victorian U20 state team, where his remarkably athletic and versatile game was on full display as he secured a spot on the All-Star 5 at the U20 National Championships in February.

Since taking flight at the U20 National Championships earlier this year, Okwera has received close to 20 NCAA D1 scholarship offers, including the likes of Maryland, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest and Arkansas. But before he makes a decision on his basketball future, he’ll spend the remainder of 2020 and 2021 at the Centre of Excellence developing his game alongside some of the top prospects in the nation. The CoE has produced some of Australian basketballs biggest names and a number of Olympic stars, including the likes of Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, Luc Longley, Aron Baynes, Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova, Dante Exum, and fellow Cobra, Josh Kunen.
