The VYC Cobra Men have dominated the Nunawading Spectres in a rematch of last year’s VYC Grand Final series, while a late comeback by the Women saw them fall short in the final seconds on the road.

Mark Landells Men were simply spectacular in the second half of Sunday’s game, with Jorden Adnam and Will MacRae combining for 19 points in a crushing 23-7 third quarter run. Taking a 17 point lead into the final stanza, the Cobras didn’t let up as they continued to pour it on against the Spectres, putting together arguably their most complete game of the 2018 season.

Kilsyth outscored the Spectres, 52-21 over the final 20 minutes of play, with their 31 point victory in stark contrast to last year’s finals series, one which saw all three games go down to the wire. Guard Mitch Dielemans led Kilsyth with 21 points and six assists; Jamie Ahale recorded a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double; Adnam finished with 17 points and seven boards; MacRae added 12 points, and Liam Evans chipped in with 15 points in the win.

The win boost the Cobras record to 8-6, good for third in the Watson Conference standings.

The Cobra Women couldn’t overcome a mid-game offensive drought, going cold in the second and third quarters to fall behind by double-digits, with a last minute comeback falling just shot to lose, 66-69.

After a blistering opening period of play, Claire Knights Women managed just 20 points combined over the second and third quarters to fall behind by 12 approaching the final stanza. The Cobras would close to within three on several occasions late in the game, and had a chance in the final seconds to tie the game, but could not capitalise as they dropped their sixth game of the season.

Erin Burgoyne led Kilsyth with a career-high 18 points, Grace Moxey scored 14, and Britt Miller added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss. The Women’s record now stands at 7-6, keeping them in third place in the Watson Conference standings.

Both our VYC Men and Women return home this Sunday as they take on the Hawthorn Magic. The Women tip-off proceedings at 12pm, with the Men to follow at 2pm. As usual, all VYC home games are FREE for all to attend!
