The NWBL Cobras had a dream opening weekend to the 2018 season, riding monster performances from Tristan Knowles and Jontee Brown to start the season 4-0.

From the coach, Shane Furness:

We had a good start to the season with four wins from four starts. We were very happy with our overall result but still have much work to do if we are to be competitive against the likes of the Brisbane Bullets and Wollongong Roller Hawks – both teams are extremely talented and serious championship contenders.

The boys pushed hard with only two subs available and the bench played their role well, we stuck to our game plan and rallied to keep our opponents to low scores. Our average winning margin was 27 points, placing us in a tie for first place with Wollongong.

Tristan Knowles found his shooting form from 2016 averaging 36 points, seven rebounds, and 11.5 assists per game. Our youngster Jontee Brown was outstanding, recording three double-doubles, including a 31-point, 20-rebound game against Adelaide.

Championship favourites Wollongong will be tough to beat this season and we will have to work hard to defend their scoring prowess. Brisbane’s full court defensive pressure was again on show which will test our ability in transition.

Although we are without 3 starters from last season, we showed that we have plenty to offer and force the opposition teams to be at their best to beat us. We are having a week off while Tristan and I head to Italy with the Rollers tour but back in the gym after that.
